of the SHAZAM software on different operating system
platforms.
Section 1: SHAZAMW
Section 2: SHAZAMD
Check the Updates section at the SHAZAM web page. Q1.2: How do I execute my command/input file in SHAZAMW?In SHAZAMW, the 2 methods of running SHAZAM commands are Batch Mode and Talk Mode. Batch Mode requires the use of the Editor Window. Use the File-Open menu itme to open an existing SHAZAM command file or use the File-New to create a new command file, or work in the one that is created by default called Editor. Press the Run icon on the toolbar to execute the SHAZAM commands or Select Run Batch under the Run Menu or Press the F5 key. Talk Mode requires the user to type in the SHAZAM commands to be executed in the SHAZAM Window.
If SHAZAMW crashes before the completion of a batch file, the SHAZAM output maybe in the .tmp file in the SHAZAM directory. This file can be opened in a text editor and users may recover their work. This feature is not available if the user operates from the SHAZAM Window. When SHAZAM output is printed on paper using a word processing package, the SHAZAM output will not read correctly. You will have lines of output wrapping to the next line etc. To correct this problem, use the Courier font in the word processing software for the SHAZAM output on a PC and the Monaco font on a Macintosh/Power Macintosh.
The message:
indicates that your computer has not been properly setup with the FTP command. You will need to contact your computer technician or Information Technology (IT) consultant to have your computer configured to be able to use the FTP command from the MSDOS mode. When the error message states that the file ODBC32.DLL is missing then you will need to check the directory c:\windows\system (for Windows 95/98 users) or c:\winnt\system32 (for Windows NT users) for this file. If this file does not exist, you will need to download the file from the Microsoft website. Further information is available at the SHAZAM web page.
If you are using Windows NT, 2000 or XP, you must sign on as the Administrator in order to install SHAZAM. Otherwise, SHAZAM will not be installed properly on your computer. If you do not have Administrator access, you should speak to your Computer Technician to do the installation.
The most common error is that users try to use SHAZAM Windows Professional Edition when they have purchased the SHAZAM Windows Standard Edition. The Windows Standard Edition Unlock Code will not work with the Professional Edition. To use the Professional Edition, you will be required to purchase the Professional Edition Unlock Code. To purchase the Professional Edition Unlock Code, please email SHAZAM Information as indicated on the homepage
If you have multiple copies of these files, SHAZAM will get confused and thus, the problem with registering your new copy of SHAZAM. You should have only one copy of each of these files, be sure the files are installed in the SHAZAM directory. Now, load the SHAZAM Windows Professional Edition and register your copy of SHAZAM. Alternatively, you can register the SHAZAM Professional Edition from shazamd or shazamw. Exit Windows to the MSDOS Prompt. At the MSDOS Prompt, change to the SHAZAM directory. Now type:
SHAZAMD will load and the computer will ask you to:
To load SHAZAM Windows Professional Edition, at the MSDOS Prompt, type shazamp or load SHAZAM Professional Edition from the SHAZAM Professional Icon.
SHAZAM Version 8 is no longer supported. Users should upgrade to Version 10.
You may need to uninstall and reinstall SHAZAM in the case when the Registration information did not work the first time.
Step 1: You must get into a command line session.
Note: If you are using Windows NT, 2000 or XP, you must sign on as the Administrator in order to install SHAZAM. Otherwise, SHAZAM will not be installed properly on your computer. If you do not have Administrator access, you should speak to your Computer Technician to do the installation.
To enter into a Command Line Session you will need to drag your mouse to the MS-DOS Prompt (Command Prompt for Windows XP users) icon located on your desktop or under the Start menu and then select Programs. (For Windows XP users, the Command Prompt may not be on your Start menu so you will need to search for Command Line under the Windows HELP.) Release the mouse at the MS-DOS Prompt. This will get you into the Command Line Session.
You will need to specify the DEVICE=GIF OUTPUT=filename.gif options on the GRAPH command. For example: graph consume year / device=gif output=my.gif When SHAZAM saves the file my.gif on your computer, it will assign another name to the file (for example, GN453640.gif).You will need to check your current directory for the file name with the .gif extension. If you plan to upload the gif file to your website, remember, the path maybe case sensitive. It is important to specify the file name (for example, GN453640.gif)exactly as it is displayed on your computers's hard disk.
First locate the System icon under the Control Panel. Then go to Advanced. From here, go to the Environment Variables and then Edit Path under user variables, or better under system variables if you have Administrator access.
When editing, be sure not to delete any of the current paths. All you need to do is add: ;c:\shazam at the end of the path. This is similar to Windows 2000 and NT operating systems. Q1.13I have included the SHAZAM directory in the path statement of my computer with the Windows XP operating system as per instructions in Q1.12. Every time I try to register my version of SHAZAM, the Registration Window just clears and I am back at square one. What is wrong?Be sure to check that the SHAZAM directory was properly put into the PATH statement using your Control Panel settings. If you accidentially put the SHAZAM path on the COMSPEC line instead of the PATH statement then you will have a problem registering SHAZAM. For example, the COMSPEC statement could look like: SET COMSPEC=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\COMMAND.COM;C:\SHAZAM COMSPEC is a secondary command interpreter and it meant that (in a DOS session) everything that is typed goes into the SHAZAM directory instead of DOS. As a result, there is no output even if you typed DIR (to get a directory listing).
You cannot copy and paste the existing Registration Information for SHAZAM from your old computer to your new computer. You must key in the Registration information from scratch. First, you will need to clean the Registry on your new computer. Exit Windows to the MSDOS Prompt. At the MSDOS Prompt, change to the SHAZAM directory. Now type:
When SHAZAM has cleaned the Registry, a message will be displayed indicating that the Registry is cleaned. Now, you will be required to Register your copy of SHAZAM. The SHAZAM Command and Data files are on the SHAZAM software CD. If you load the CD into your CD drive and click on the Explorer to view the contents of the CD, you will see the following folders:
Within the Textbook folder, you will see the following folders:
Each folder contains the SHAZAM Command and Data files to the corresponding econometric textbook. The reason for this error is that there is an ActiveX control included with SHAZAM that has for some reason not been registered with Windows when the software was installed. This can happen if the user installing SHAZAM has insufficient security rights or there is a network restriction. To solve this you can do two possible things: 1. You can completely reinstall SHAZAM from the CD ensuring you are logged in with Administrator security rights. 2. Go to the MSDOS prompt and type: CD C:\SHAZAM if this is where SHAZAM is installed. Otherwise navigate with the CD command to the directory to where SHAZAM is installed. Next type: REGSVR32 MSFLXGRD.OCX You should be presented with a Message Box that displays: DllRegisterServer in MSFLXGRD.OCX succeeded Restart SHAZAM and your problem should be resolved.
This error occurs when the Read and Write privileges for the files have not been properly assigned. Check the assigned privileges for the files. SHAZAMD is a Command Line version of SHAZAM that runs with the Windows 95/98/NT/2000/Me/XP operating system. |
